Receipt Scanning
On iPhone or Android, tap Scan Receipt and point the camera at the check. Pitip reads the total, tax, and any service fees, then shows you what it found so you can confirm or correct each amount before it is applied.
Everything happens on your device. No photo is saved, and no image or text is uploaded. Declining camera access disables scanning and leaves the rest of the app working normally.
It read the wrong total
Every scanned amount is editable on the confirmation screen before you tap Use, so just tap the field and correct it. Scanning is a shortcut for typing, not a replacement for checking your bill.
It missed the tax or the fee
Pitip looks for labeled amounts. Receipts that abbreviate unusually, print the tax without a label, or place amounts in a column layout can defeat it. Enter the missing amount by hand on the confirmation screen and the rest of the reading still stands.
It picked up a suggested-tip amount
Many receipts print a gratuity guide showing 18%, 20%, and 22% with dollar amounts. Pitip is built to ignore those, but if one slips through, correct it on the confirmation screen and please send us a photo of the receipt so we can fix it.
Nothing happens when I tap Scan Receipt
Check that camera access is allowed for Pitip in your device Settings. Scanning also needs a rear camera, so it is unavailable in simulators and on hardware without one.
Tips for a clean read
Flatten the receipt, get even light on it, and frame the whole check rather than zooming in on one line. Thermal paper that has begun to fade is the hardest case; typing the total is faster than fighting it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Pitip store my bill totals or personal data?
No. All calculations happen on your device, including receipt text recognition. Nothing is sent to any server. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Does scanning a receipt upload a photo anywhere?
No. The camera frame is read on your device, using Apple's Vision framework on iOS and Google's ML Kit on Android. No photo is saved to your library or written to storage, and no image or recognized text leaves your phone. Declining camera access disables scanning and leaves everything else working.
How do I avoid tipping on a service fee?
Turn on "Tip before tax & fees" and enter the tax and fee amounts from the receipt. Pitip then calculates the tip from the subtotal alone. On an $86.75 check with $7.16 tax and a $3.00 service fee, a 20% tip comes to $15.32 instead of $17.35.
Can I use a custom tip percentage?
Yes. Tap "Custom" on the tip selector and enter any percentage you'd like.
How does splitting work?
Pitip divides the total (tip included) evenly across the number of people you specify. Perfect for group meals, and everyone pays their fair share.
How does rounding work?
You can round the final total up or down to a cleaner number. This is especially useful when paying cash. Pitip automatically adjusts the tip to make the total land on a round amount.
How do I pay a specific final amount?
Use "Make total…" on iPhone or Android. Enter exactly what you want to pay, and Pitip back-calculates the tip percentage that gets you there.
What is free, and how do the five free Pro uses work?
Basic tipping is free forever: enter the total, pick a percentage, round, share. Pro features (receipt scanning, bill splitting, pre-tax tipping, Make total, and custom quick tips) share five free uses. Each bill that uses a Pro feature spends one, and using two Pro features on the same bill spends two. An orange badge shows how many are left. After that, a one-time Pitip Pro purchase unlocks them for good, with no subscription.
I bought Pitip when it was a paid app. Do I have Pro?
Yes, at no extra charge. Open the Pro screen in the app and tap Restore Purchases. On iOS, make sure you are signed in with the same Apple Account you bought it with; on Android, the same Google account.
What languages does Pitip speak?
Pitip is available in English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, and Brazilian Portuguese, on the phone, on the watch, and in the widgets. It follows your device language automatically, and you can choose a different language just for Pitip in your device's Settings.
Why does the watch app have fewer options?
By design. The watch app is intentionally streamlined for speed and discretion. For receipt scanning, splitting, rounding, target totals, and pre-tax tipping, use the full app on your phone.
Troubleshooting
Totals look wrong
Check your split count, rounding settings, and whether pre-tax mode is enabled. Each setting affects the final total.
App is stuck or unresponsive
Force quit the app and relaunch. If the problem persists, restart your device. As a last resort, delete and reinstall. Your settings and recent bills will reset; nothing else is lost because nothing is stored on any server.
Watch app not updating
Ensure your watch and phone are paired and both running the latest version of Pitip and their respective OS. A watch restart often resolves sync issues.
Reporting a bug
Email [email protected] with the bill amount, tip percentage, your settings (split, rounding, pre-tax), device model, and app version. Screenshots or screen recordings are very helpful.
